Squealing: The Early Warning
A high squeal when you press the pedal usually means the brake pads are getting thin. Many pads have a small metal tab built in that rubs the rotor on purpose to make that sound. It is annoying, and that is the point — it means “book a brake job soon.”
At this stage you are usually fine to keep driving for a little while, but do not wait months. Get a free brake check and we will measure exactly how much pad is left.
Grinding: Stop and Call
A harsh grinding, like metal scraping metal, means the pads are gone. Now the metal backing plate is cutting into the rotor. Every stop makes it worse and more expensive, and your stopping distance is longer than it should be.

Other Brake Signs to Know
- Shaky steering wheel or pedal when braking from higher speed — usually warped or grooved rotors.
- The car pulls to one side when you slow down — often a stuck caliper.
- A soft or low pedal, or one that sinks toward the floor — this can be air or a leak in the brake fluid. Treat it as serious.
- Longer stops than usual — worn pads, old fluid, or both.
What It Costs to Wait
Worn pads let the metal backing chew into the rotor. That turns a simple pad job into pads plus rotors. Push it further and a stuck caliper or damaged hardware gets added to the list. The safest and cheapest move is to handle brakes when the squeal starts, not when the grind starts.
