The alternator is the part that makes power while the engine runs. It charges your battery and feeds the lights, radio, and computers. When it goes bad, your car can die and not start again.

We have rebuilt alternators for years at Tough Knuckles Automotive. Most jobs are done the same day when we can get the part. Every alternator rebuild we do comes with a 1-year warranty.

Know the signs

Signs you might notice

  • The battery light on your dash comes on while you drive.
  • Your headlights get dim at night or flicker when you speed up.
  • The radio or dash screen shuts off for no reason.
  • You smell hot rubber or burning from under the hood.
  • The car starts fine, then stalls a few miles later.
  • You hear a whine or growl from the front of the engine.

What's behind it

Common causes

  • Worn brushes and bearings inside the alternator from many miles of use.
  • A loose or cracked drive belt that cannot spin the alternator fast enough.
  • Heat and road salt that wear out the wiring and connections.
  • A bad diode inside the unit that leaks power and drains the battery overnight.
  • An old alternator that has simply reached the end of its life, often past 100,000 miles.

How it works

How we handle it

1

You bring the car to our Holland shop and tell us what it has been doing.

2

We test the alternator, belt, and battery with a meter to confirm the charging output is low.

3

We remove the alternator and rebuild it with new brushes, bearings, and diodes, or install a quality replacement.

4

We put it back in, check the charging numbers again, and make sure the battery light is off before you leave.

What we check

  • The voltage the alternator puts out at idle and at higher engine speed.
  • The drive belt for cracks, glazing, and correct tightness.
  • The battery cables and ground straps for rust and loose bolts.
  • The battery itself, since a weak battery can kill a new alternator.
  • The plug and wiring at the back of the alternator for burnt pins.

Why this matters

If you ignore a bad alternator, the car runs on battery power alone. That power does not last long. The lights fade, the engine stalls, and you can end up stuck on the side of the road. A weak charging system can also ruin a good battery. Fixing it early keeps you from a tow and a bigger bill.

Frequently asked questions

What does an alternator rebuild involve?
We take the alternator apart and replace the worn parts inside, like the brushes, bearings, and diodes. Then we test it to make sure it makes steady power. It is a way to fix the unit without always buying a whole new one.
Can I keep driving with the battery light on?
Only for a short time, and it is risky. The car is running on the battery once the alternator quits. Drive straight to us or call for advice. Do not park far from home.
How long does the job take?
Most alternator swaps are done the same day when we can get the part. If your car needs an odd or special part, it may take an extra day. We will tell you up front.
Do you warranty the work?
Yes. Our alternator rebuilds come with a 1-year warranty. If the rebuilt unit fails in that time, we make it right. Keep your receipt.
How long should an alternator last?
Many alternators last around 100,000 to 150,000 miles. Heat, short trips, and a weak battery can wear one out sooner. Age matters as much as miles.
Do I have to bring the car to your shop?
Yes. All our work is done at 932 Holland Park Blvd in Holland, Ohio. We do not have a mobile or roadside service. Call us first for a free estimate.
