The check engine light means your car’s computer saw something it did not like. The light by itself does not tell you the fix. It is a starting point, not an answer.
Steady Light vs. Flashing Light
- Steady light, car drives normal: Not an emergency. Get it checked in the next few days. Common causes are simple, like a loose gas cap or a worn sensor.
- Flashing light: More serious. It usually means the engine is misfiring and dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. That can damage the catalytic converter, which is a costly part. Drive gently and get it in fast. If the car is also shaking or losing power, do not drive it far.
Can I Keep Driving?
If the light is steady and the car feels normal — same power, no shaking, no strange sounds or smells — short trips are usually fine until your appointment. If the car runs rough, stalls, overheats, or the light is flashing, bring it in right away. When in doubt, call the shop and describe what it is doing.
Why the Parts-Store Code Reader Isn’t Enough
A free code scan gives you a code like “P0300.” That is a clue, not a cause. The same code can come from spark plugs, coils, a vacuum leak, low fuel pressure, or a bad sensor. If you buy parts based on the code alone, you can spend a lot of money and still have the light on.
At our shop, we pull the codes and the live data, then test the actual parts — spark, fuel, air, and compression as needed — to find the real cause. That is the whole point of engine diagnostics.

Common Causes We See
- Loose or cracked gas cap
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils (a misfire)
- A bad oxygen sensor or air-flow sensor
- A small vacuum leak
- A clogged fuel injector or weak fuel pump
Some of these overlap with a rough idle or poor gas mileage, and some overlap with an electrical fault. Testing sorts it out.
