The alternator is the part that makes power while your engine runs. It charges the battery and feeds the lights, the radio, and the computers. When it starts to fail, your car will usually warn you first. Here are six signs to watch for.
1. The Battery Light Comes On
That little battery symbol does not mean “bad battery.” It means the charging system is not keeping up. Most of the time, that is the alternator. Do not ignore it. Once the alternator quits, the car runs on battery power alone, and that does not last long.
2. Dim or Flickering Lights
Watch your headlights at night. If they go dim when you slow down and brighten when you speed up, the alternator is struggling. A dash screen or dome light that fades in and out is the same story.
3. A Dead Battery That Keeps Coming Back

4. Strange Sounds From the Front of the Engine
A worn alternator bearing makes a whine or a growl. A loose or cracked drive belt makes a squeal. Both mean the alternator may not be spinning the way it should.
5. A Burning Smell
A slipping belt or an overworked alternator can smell like hot rubber or hot wires. If you smell that under the hood, get the car looked at soon.
6. Electrical Stuff Acting Weird
Slow power windows, a radio that resets, gauges that jump — when voltage drops, the odd little problems pile up all at once.
